Wacky ways to celebrate Earth Day all year round

April 22, 2011

In light of Earth Day, I’d like to share some of the more interesting ways that we can help our planet thrive all year round. Remember everyone- reduce, reuse, then recycle!

  • Eating some creepy crawlers! If more of us ate insects than cattle, it would greatly ease our global warming problem we’ve created. If you’re not interested in crunching some crickets, try eating a few veggie-only meals in the week. It’ll help your heart as well as your carbon footprint.
  • Use a reusable container for beverages! Try bringing your own coffee mug into your favorite coffee shop or your own water bottle into the office in an effort to reuse & recycle.
  • Toss your rubber ducky! You heard me, take a long hard look into those beady eyes and say goodbye. Anything vinyl in your bathroom goes too, such as vinyl shower curtains and other bath toys. They are softened with a hormone-disrupting chemical and can leak those chemicals into the water when they get hot. Yuck!
  • Walk around Naked! Maybe not in public….but listen to these facts. It takes approximately 250 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to make just one pair of jeans and another 165 gallons to dilute the pesticides and fertilizers used to grow it. A less awkward option: buy vintage clothing when you can.
  • Live with some Chickadees! That’s right, the pet that gives back to you and the Earth, those cute, furry little chickens. You’ll get fresh eggs; they’ll eat your table scraps and provide you with fertilizer for your garden, because you wanted some fresh veggies for your omelet, right?
